Alberta NSWOC Canada Summit
Calgary Ostomy was invited as an exhibitor at the provincial Alberta Wounds, Ostomy, and Continence Summit in Red Deer on October 5, 2023.
This NSWOC Canada Summit engaged with patients, government, and healthcare professionals on the importance of improving access to specialized wound, ostomy, and continence care for all Albertans.
The event ran from 8 am to 2:30 pm, including a continental breakfast and a delicious lunch, allowing time for individual networking and conversations. There were several ostomy manufacturers and vendors exhibitors in attendance to answer any questions from the attendees. It was an excellent opportunity to promote awareness about Calgary Ostomy and the services we can provide.
There were mostly NSWOC nurses in the audience, with much of the agenda being about Alberta’s state of health care and the increased need for services. As we all know, the government has been making many cutbacks in health spending, and one area directly affected is specialized nursing. The dialogue was directed at politicians; while over 200 were invited, only one was in attendance. We also saw some heartbreaking pictures of babies with wounds related to unsafe drinking water, an issue with many rural areas and Native Reserves across Canada.
The hope is to bring awareness and education to the government and the general public. The Calgary Ostomy Society supports our NSWOC nurses, who are vital to the health and well-being of ostomy patients.
