Volunteering With Calgary Ostomy Society
COS relies on volunteer time and energy to keep it going.
While we have many talented volunteers, we are in need of many more.
Volunteering on our Executive Committee involves an ongoing commitment to assisting with the general operation of COS. The following positions are currently open, and we are in need of volunteers ASAP!
We are currently looking for members to fill the following part-time, shared positions volunteer positions. Please note that while it is not necessary to have an ostomy to volunteer, but membership with COS is required.
Volunteer Visiting Coordinator
This position is shared with another volunteer coordinator. Responsibilities include coordinating our ostomy society volunteer visitors for our Calgary area ostomy patients. Either by responding to ET nurse calls from local hospitals or people who reach out to us via the ostomy society website. We endeavour to match those patients who are either approaching or recovering from surgery with an appropriate visitor via phone or in person visit. Minimal record keeping is required to track the people we assist. Also required is willingness to recruit new volunteer visitors and training them in our procedures. Preference will be given to those currently trained as a volunteer visitor.
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours a week, varying month to month based on demand.
Social Media Coordinator
This position is shared with the newsletter editor. Responsibilities will include posting regular updates to the Calgary Ostomy Society’s social media outlets including, but not limited to, blog posts, photos, video, news articles, and other promotional items. Monitoring activity and user interactions for all social media outlets. Attending COS executive meetings and events for the purpose of capturing images and interacting with volunteers and members. Maintain the COS social media accounts.
Time commitment: 1-2 hours per week, varying month to month based on demand.

VOLUNTEER VISITING PROGRAM
We are always looking for new volunteers to visit patients undergoing ostomy surgery in hospital. Time committment is minimal, and police clearance is required. Training is mandatory, so please contact us for more information.
We are in need of male volunteers between the ages of 19 and 50, who have either an ileostomy or colostomy.
Twice per year, we organize an event on behalf of the Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada. This involves a day of hard work, (lifting, standing, etc.), at the CB Medical Warehouse. We unpack boxes of ostomy supply donations, sort them out according to type (colostomy, urostomy, 1-piece & 2-piece systems, etc.), and repack for shipment to FOWC headquarters in Toronto. We typically email members, and post the event on our website and Facebook the month before a Packup.
