Step Up For Ostomy Planning Committee 2023
Calgary Ostomy is looking for volunteers within the ostomy community to form a planning committee for the Step Up For Ostomy Charity & Awareness Walk that will be taking place on September 16.
Step Up For Ostomy is the primary fundraising event for the Ostomy Canada Society. Step Up For Ostomy walks take place in communities all across Canada – raising funds in support of programs and services, raising awareness of Ostomy Canada, and eliminating the stigma of living with an ostomy. All Step Up For Ostomy walks are planned and organized by volunteer committees. We are seeking volunteers to help plan Step Up For Ostomy in Calgary, Alberta.
Committee volunteers work to promote the event in the community, secure sponsorships and donations, handle logistics, recruit day of event volunteers, and more. Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, Step Up For Ostomy raised over $100 000 last year to support the healing journey of persons undergoing ostomy and other bowel and bladder diversionary surgeries. Last year, the Calgary Ostomy executive committee had some big shoes to fill. We feel that with the help of extra volunteers, this event can be bigger and better! We welcome those with an ostomy or j-pouch, supporters, NSWOC nurses, medical professionals, ostomy manufacturers, and vendors.
The planning cycle typically begins in the spring and continues until the walk is held on September 16. Volunteers contribute approximately 1-5 hours per month – attending the monthly meeting/conference call and following up on action items. The time commitment will vary for each person depending on their assignment. The time requirement typically increases in the weeks before the walk. Volunteers may also serve for event day volunteer duties, but we will post another listing specifically for that in the coming months.
Volunteers are still needed for the following duties:
- Goodie Bags (obtain ostomy-related and general samples and goodies)
- Public relations (A news and media contact person is needed to prepare a press release. )
- Walk Leader (pre-plan the route and lead the participants through on event day.)
- Luncheon (Coordinate menu, and obtain donations)
- Event sponsorship (Help us find local sponsors for the hall rental, t-shirts, lunch, supplies, and gift cards for door prizes)
Steps Up For Ostomy committee positions provide opportunities to network with the ostomy community, enhance existing skills and learn new ones, and contribute to the success of a beautiful event that is making a significant difference in the lives of families who have experienced ostomy surgery.
